The latest research from LinkedIn reveals that millennials are dominating top AI roles and commanding six-figure salaries. However, a closer look at the data shows a disturbing trend: while young professionals are reaping the benefits of the AI boom, they are predominantly men.

Women make up just 20% of head of AI hires, 26% of director of AI hires, and only 18% of technical staff hires. Meanwhile, millennials account for 60% of new hires in these roles, with median salaries reaching $236,000. This stark contrast raises questions about the true nature of the AI revolution.

Is it a democratization of expertise, where anyone can contribute regardless of background or education? Or is it simply a continuation of existing power dynamics, where those already holding the reins get to reap the benefits?

One notable aspect of LinkedIn’s findings is the contrast between millennials and Gen Z. While young workers face high unemployment rates in many sectors – 7.2% for 22-27 year olds – AI appears to be an exception. Over two-thirds of new hires for forward deployed engineer and AI engineer roles are under the age of 30, suggesting that these newer AI roles may indeed offer a strong entry point for younger workers.

However, this silver lining is tempered by another disturbing trend: the importance of higher education in securing top AI jobs. A staggering 95% of new hires for head of AI, AI director, and technical staff roles hold a bachelor’s degree or higher – relegating those without one to lower-paying roles like data annotation.

This perpetuates a vicious cycle: those who already have the privilege of a four-year degree secure the highest-paying jobs, while those without access to education are forced into the lowest-paying rungs. This is not just about income inequality; it’s also about systemic exclusion.

The report concludes that AI “democratizes expertise,” but in reality, it seems to be concentrating power and wealth among those who already hold it. The industry needs to confront this uncomfortable truth and work towards creating more inclusive opportunities for workers from all backgrounds.

The fact that women and workers without degrees are being shut out of top AI roles is a stain on an industry that prides itself on innovation and disruption. Until the AI sector addresses these disparities, its claims of democratization will ring hollow.
