While resolution is often cited as the key to picture quality, it’s actually the amount of data devoted to video that makes all the difference.

Bitrate management has been a persistent challenge for streaming services, particularly in an era where they are pushing the boundaries of what can be delivered over the internet. This tradeoff is evident in Netflix’s own recommendations: while they encourage users to hook up their 4K TVs with a robust connection, they also acknowledge that picture quality may suffer if the internet is slow or unstable. When video data is squeezed to fit through the internet pipe, details are inevitably lost, particularly when it comes to film grain, which is notoriously difficult to compress without introducing noticeable blockiness.

High-end codecs like HEVC can be pushed only so far before picture quality begins to suffer, and then there’s the issue of bitrate ceilings – those maximum video rates supported by Ultra HD Blu-ray discs (108 Mbps on 66GB discs and 128 Mbps on 100GB discs). These may seem arbitrary, but they represent a fundamental limit imposed by the physical constraints of disc storage.

To close the gap with Blu-ray, streaming services can adopt more efficient codecs or implement higher bitrates for select content. Sony Pictures Core’s Pure Stream mode is a good example: by offering high-bitrate streams (up to 80 Mbps) and requiring a fast internet connection (at least 115 Mbps), they’re able to deliver an experience comparable to UHD Blu-ray.

However, even with these improvements, streaming will always be at a disadvantage when it comes to bitrate due to the fundamental tradeoffs required by internet delivery. This raises an important question: what does this mean for the future of home entertainment? As consumers increasingly turn to streaming services for their 4K fix, it’s worth considering whether the convenience and flexibility they offer come at a cost we’re willing to pay.

Local streaming options like Plex are gaining popularity – which can send compatible video files directly to devices without recompressing them. Perhaps it’s time to rethink our assumptions about what constitutes “quality” in home entertainment.
