B. C. 's Pulp Industry in Free Fall The recent announcement by Domtar that it will idle its Howe Sound Pulp and Paper mill indefinitely marks a stark turning point for the sector.
The decision affects approximately 400 employees, following closely on the heels of a similar move to permanently close another mill in Crofton last December.
Domtar's president, Luc Thériault, attributes the business decision to reduced demand from Asia, unprecedented price drops for pulp globally, and a decline in affordable domestic fibre.
